WHAT ARE ‘ENDURING STORIES’ BUILT ON?
ENDURING stories (as opposed to passing tales) are always built on a problem-solving, argument-addressing, worldview-analyzing foundation that pushes storyformers to develop Grand-Argument Stories.
And what are “Grand-Argument Stories”?
Stories of contests (like those below and a few hundred other “classics”) involving “well-worldviewed characters engaged in active problem-solving, where the focused-on problem/inequity
is so mentally ‘tricky’ that at least one character’s worldview change will become essential, and the lion’s share of the audience will ’emotionally learn and apply’ something from that character’s worldview change and another character’s refusal to change.”
History clearly shows that those in Hollywood (or anywhere) who understand this concept make GREAT STORIES. The rest just make tales “full of sound and fury, signifying nothing…”
Great thoughts. I’ve already started to adopt this point-of-view, that is, the “Grand-Argument” in story telling. Let’s hope others gain insight and wisdom from this type of story telling!
Actually, Garrett, it’s better storyFORMING that is needed, so that the worldview change comes across as quite unexpected, or at least intriguingly difficult, complimented by storyTELLING that makes getting to “the change” a really fantastic ride!
